This Saturday, he is one of the biggest favorites in Hungary’s preselection final. Viktor Kirly qualified with an almost-maximum score from the jury and feels confident in the build up to the conclusion of A Dal. Last weekend, he spoke with Steef van Gorkum about his sister, his music and the possible Eurovision fame.
“Participating in Eurovision crossed my mind – I would be lying if I said it had not. But it’s not the main thing why I am here. I want to show people a part of my music, a part of me. That is the main thing. Then again: showing that bit to the world, and showing a bit of Hungary to the world, would be even better!”
How do you look upon a competition, with such diversity in styles?
“Comparing songs as in Eurovision is a weird thing. So many songs are good! So many songs have different qualities. My quality would be that it is not a typical Eurovision song. It’s not a big ballad, it’s not a song with a certain climax. It is just a radio pop song, you hear it and you feel good. That is what mine is about. I hope it will be enough to win, because the competition so fierce.”
If you were not here, but at home – who would you vote for?
“The correct answer is to say: for everyone. Right? But that would not be interesting. Okay, I would vote for New Level Empire. I also think that Gigi and Joni had good songs, they really had the Eurovision song I talked about. I was surprised that they did not qualify last weekend.”
They were not the only one. Your sister is also out of the competition. How did you feel about that?
“To be honest: if I lose, I will be sad, but not as sad as I was when my sister went out. I believe she is one of the most talented people, not just in Hungary but in the world. She maybe deserved to win here even more than I do.”
